Joel L. Fletcher papers, 1960-2006 (bulk, 1990-2006)

This collection consists of Joel L. Fletcher's correspondence, typescript drafts of published writings, programs, brochures, clippings, transcripts of conversations, annotated galley proofs of his own and others' writings, printed material, photographs, and audio recordings. Much of the later correspondence is in the form of printed e-mail; letters dating from the 1960s include original handwritten letters from John Kennedy Toole and others in their literary circle. The items in this collection primarily involve the writing and publishing of Joel Fletcher's book, Ken and Thelma, a memoir dealing with his friendship with John Kennedy Toole and with Toole's mother, Thelma. The memoir specifically focuses on the story behind the posthumous publication of Toole's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, A Confederacy of dunces. This collection also includes a galley of Ignatius rising, an alternate work by René Pol Nevils, dealing with Toole's life, with annotations by Joel Fletcher.
