John Kennedy Toole was born in New Orleans in 1937 and graduated from Tulane University. He earned a master's degree from Columbia University. He served in the army and later taught at Hunter College, the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette), and Dominican College. Toole commited suicide in 1969. In 1981 he was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his novel A Confederacy of Dunces. From the description of John Kennedy Tool...

Joel L. Fletcher was born in Lafayette, La., in 1935, remaining there through high school. In 1957, he received his B.A. degree from Tulane University. Between 1957 and 1960, he served as a gunnery officer aboard the carrier U.S.S. Bennington. During 1960-1961 he pursued graduate study at Stanford University, and then independent study in Italy, France, and England.
